Types of Massage
Swedish massage uses five styles of strokes. The five basic strokes are effleurage ( sliding or gliding ), petrissage ( kneading ), tapotement ( rhythmic tapping ), friction ( cross fiber or with the fibers ) and vibration / shaking. The term "Swedish" massage is actually only recognized in English and Dutch speaking countries, and in Hungary. Elsewhere the style is referred to as "classic massage". The most common type of massage is Swedish massage therapy. It involves the use of hands, forearms or elbows to manipulate the superficial layers of the muscles to improve mental and physical health. Hot stone massage therapy melts away tension, eases muscle stiffness and increases circulation and metabolism. Hot stone massage is a specialty massage where the therapist uses smooth, heated stones as an extension of their own hands, or by placing them on the body. The heat can be both deeply relaxing and help warm up tight muscles so the therapist can work more deeply. The modern revival of hot stones in massage is generally credited to Mary Nelson, a native of Tucson, Arizona. She trademarked her style of hot stone massage, called LaStone Therapy, which has a Native American spiritual component and requires training and certification. Most spas offer their own versions of hot stone massage ( might call it lava stone massage, river rock massage, warm stone massage and so on ). A hot stone massage, however, takes a lot of skill and sensitivity on the part of the therapist.
Aroma Therapy Massage

Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage therapy is similar to Swedish massage. Deep-tissue massage is a specific type of massage therapy that concentrates on the deep layers of muscle and fascia in the body; and recommended by many doctors as a treatment option. By using deep finger pressure and slow, firm strokes, deep tissue massage is used to treat a variety of physical ailments. Deep tissue massage is best for giving attention to certain painful, stiff "trouble spots" in body. Though less rhythmic than other types of massage, deep tissue massage can be quite therapeutic - relieving chronic patterns of tension and helping with muscle injuries, such as back sprain.
In the Japanese language, shiatsu means "finger pressure". Shiatsu techniques include massages with fingers, thumbs, feet and palms; assisted stretching; and joint manipulation and mobilization. To examine a patient, a shiatsu practitioner uses palpation and, sometimes, pulse diagnosis. Shiatsu has a strong reputation for reducing stress and relieving nausea and vomiting. Shiatsu is also believed to improve circulation and boost the immune system. Some people use it to treat diarrhea, indigestion, constipation, and other disorders of the gastrointestinal tract; menstrual and menopausal problems; chronic pain; migraine; arthritis; toothache; anxiety; and depression. Shiatsu can be used to relieve muscular pain or tension, especially neck and back pain. Shiatsu is performed through clothing. The session takes place on a shiatsu mat at floor level or a massage chair or table.
"Thai massage" or "Thai yoga massage" is an ancient healing system combining acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles, and assisted yoga postures. Traditional Thai massage uses no oils or lotions. The recipient remains clothed during a treatment. There is constant body contact between the giver and receiver, but rather than rubbing on muscles, the body is compressed, pulled, stretched and rocked. Thai massage has many benefits for the individual. It uses the gentle pressure on energy lines and the yoga-like stretching to relax the whole body on a deeper level. This deeper level of relaxation improves the individuals' personal outlook, and their emotional status. Unlike Western massage styles, the Thai version focuses on circulation and pressure points, promoting internal health as well as muscular flexibility. Treatment often begins with the feet and gradually moves upwards towards the head. The body is gently arranged into four positions (face-down, face-up, side, and sitting position), which enables the masseur to perform a variety of exercises that would be otherwise unworkable.
